Canada Demonstrates HCNG Buses Fueled by Waste Hydrogen

An $18 million Canadian project known as the Integrated Waste Hydrogen Utilization Project (IWHUP) is now demonstrating real-world use of waste hydrogen in buses and trucks, along with a full distribution and fueling infrastructure. The efforts of a consortium of companies have resulted in a complete, actively working hydrogen system that sources its hydrogen from a vented industrial waste stream in North Vancouver. IWHUP will help fuel buses that can operate on a blend of 20% hydrogen mixed with 80% natural gas (HCNG). The local public transit company, TransLink, has converted four CNG buses into buses that can operate on the HCNG blend. North Vancouver has enough vented hydrogen to power 20,000 vehicles annually.
